Chopstick holders dyed with red turnip were chosen as souvenirs for the G7 Nagano-Karuizawa Foreign Ministers' Meeting.
2023.04.28
A chopstick case made from fabric dyed with colors extracted from red turnips, designed by students from Tokyo University of Agriculture, was distributed as part of the congress bag goods to national delegations, press members, and other participants at the G7 Nagano Karuizawa Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, from April 16 to 18, 2023.
The fabric used for the chopstick case, distributed as a commemorative item for this G7 Summit, was dyed with colors extracted from red turnip roots left over after making "Sunki," a traditional pickle made from the leaves and stems of red turnips, a specialty of Kiso Town in Nagano Prefecture. The chopstick case was paired with chopsticks made from Kiso Hinoki (Japanese cypress), and the design of the case was created by students from the Department of Food and Environmental Economics at Tokyo University of Agriculture.
This initiative, which involved collaboration across industries, companies, and students, served as an opportunity to showcase sustainability efforts through uniquely Japanese items to national delegations and many others.
